Week 6 Notes Homework and Videos
NOTE 1: ALL TRAINING SHOULD BE DONE WITH TRAINING COLLAR AND TRAINING LEASH ON.
NOTE 2: DO NOT LEAVE TRAINING COLLAR OR TRAINING SLIP LEAD ON WHEN YOU ARE NOT ACTIVELY TRAINING YOUR DOG.
NOTE 3: PLEASE PUT ON YOUR TRAINING COLLAR CORRECTLY. ALSO BE SURE TO HOLD THE LEASH CORRECTLY.
NOTE 4: THIS WEEK SITS, LURED HEEL, TRADITIONAL HEEL LET'S GO AND SIT STAYS CAN BE WORKED ON OUTSIDE ON 6' LEASH. JUST MAKE SURE THE ENVIRONMENT IS NOT OVERLY DISTRACTING.
NOTE 5: THE GOALS ARE PLACES TO WORK TO IN THE FUTURE. IF YOU DON'T MAKE THE GOAL, DON'T WORRY AS LONG AS YOU PUT IN THE WORK TOWARDS THE GOAL. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN CALL OR EMAIL ME WITH ANY TRAINING PROBLEMS THAT COME UP IN BETWEEN LESSONS.
NOTE 6: IF YOU DON'T GET THROUGH ALL THE EXERCISES IN ONE DAY, YOU CAN JUST BE SURE THAT THE EXERCISES YOU DID NOT GET TO ARE DONE THE NEXT DAY. THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE, I THINK, IS THE MOLDED SITS. HOWEVER, THEY ALL WORK TOGETHER TO START TO CHANGE BEHAVIOR.
NOTE 7: WHEN YOUR DOG WORKS WITH YOU AT HOME, YOU MAY NEED TO GO DOWN IN TIME AND THEN BUILD BACK UP TO WHERE YOUR DOG WAS TRAINING WITH ME (IF YOU ARE IN PACK LEARNING AND BOARD & TRAIN). THE DOG WILL WORK BETTER FOR WHOEVER THEY WERE LAST WORKING WITH, SO OFTEN THE TIME NEEDS TO BE BUILT UP BY THE OWNER TO HAVE THE SAME SORT OF WORKING RELATIONSHIP.
NOTE 8: TRAINING CAN BE DONE IN SEPARATE SESSIONS. I LIKE TO KEEP MY SESSIONS AT 15 MINUTES IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE DAY (EXCEPT FOR LONG PLACE). OTHERWISE, YOU CAN BURN YOUR DOG OR PUPPY OUT.
NOTE 9: MARKER WORDS ARE GOOD=GOOD JOB KEEP GOING YES=GOOD JOB YOU ARE RELEASED FROM THE EXERCISE AND NO=THAT IS NOT WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR.
NOTE 10: BLUE TEXT GOES TO THE DIRECTIONS FOR THE EXERCISES. [IT IS A LINK]
Homework Schedule:
Calming Exercises:
- (OPTIONAL) Sit on the Dog 30 + minutes Goal: To get your dog to lay down on their own steam in five minutes or under. Week 6 note: Doing this with Maggie outside would also help how distracted she is outside. You don't have to, but I would. Next spring this could be very helpful with Maggie learning to calm down around distractions.
- (NEW) Approach by Friendly Stranger 5+ minutes Goal: To get three sets of four in a row eventually.
- (CHANGE) Attention to Name 5 minutes Goal: To be able to eventually get three sets of four in a row (quick good looks and eye contact). Week 6 Optional Change: Use this also for the beginning of the heel commands and the come or recall command. Start to practice this with Maggie in distractions especially now that she will take food outside (after a warm up period).
- (SAME) Let's Go 5-10 minutes Goal: To be able to eventually get three sets of four in a row (coming towards you right away without any cajoling or corrections. Week 6 Optional Change: You can try this out in the yard if she is taking treats there. You can also work this on a six foot leash as a way to get her to move towards you and put some slack in the leash.
- (CHANGED) Recall or Come Command 5+ minutes Goal: To be able to eventually get three sets of four in a row. Week 6 Change: Drop the leash inside when doing these. You also want to get these done in not much more than 5 minutes. Also start practice this in challenging (but not too challenging) distractions.
- (CHANGED) Circle Sit Stay 5 -10 minutes Goal: To be able to get 4 in a row for a minute once completed. Week 6 Change: Drop the leash while inside, and try to get these done in not much more than 5 minutes as the goal. Also start practice this in challenging (but not too challenging) distractions.
- (CHANGED) Sits with Correction if Needed 5+ minutes Goal: To be able to do 3 sets of four repetitions in a row. Week 6 Change: You want an audio distraction (or yard distraction) and work these so that you get these done in not much more than 5 minutes with the distractions.
- (CHANGED) Lured Heeling Step 2 This is good practice especially for outside (if she is not interested in taking treats outside, do this inside so she gets practice with the position) 10 + minutes (or 15 repetitions) Goal: Be able to get 3 to 5 steps in a row before having her sit and get the food reward. It's okay to have more than the 2 or 3 steps. You just want those in good position at the end. If your dog starts to look flat, then you have practiced this too long. So keep the session to 5-10 minutes. Week 6 Change: Now you are holding the treat behind your back. Also you can work this with the leash draped over your shoulders to start to get her and you the feel similar to off leash. You want to touch that leash as little as possible.
- (CHANGED) Traditional Heel with Auto Sit Practice 10 minutes Goal: Simply to be sure to teach the position that your dog should focus on by using turns and side correction (if going to far to the left). Week 6 Change: Like above, you can practice this in low key distractions inside with the leash draped over your shoulders or the leash dragging on the ground outside (as long as it is a safe area like your electric fence yard) you can practice this way too. Off site outside use the long line or 6' leash though. Remember not to go too fast. Distractions should be challenging but no impossible for your dog.
